There’s many types of careers in education, and most of them deal with helping students become better intellectually. Some, like teachers, try to get kids to learn new facts and figures, while others try to teach them how to do sports.

As such, to become a school counselor, you need some basic skills. You need charisma, in order to talk to young people effectively. You need quick analytic skills, so you can discern real problems from a simple chat with someone, and you need to multi-task easily, since you’re likely to get many cases all at once.

To become a school counselor, you need to go through training. Typically, you’ll be expected to have a master’s degree in school counseling or something similar to that. This involves going to college for many years, a lot of training, and certification. It’s not easy to be an effective counselor, and since you’re often the last line of defense in the case of problem children, you need to be able to do a superb job.

Often, you’re the one that deals with some of the worse cases around our public schools, and so the pressure can be quite high. That’s why training is so important, and the right state of mind is needed to deal with those problems. But the salary can be quite decent in turn. A new school counselor salary can be around $33,000 and can go up to around $50,000 a year. Private schools pay more, but most often you’ll end up working in public schools.

Now as long as you work in the public sector, those amounts will rarely go higher than that. You would get more money in the private sector, and there’s no doubt that working as a counselor in a clinic, seeing adults as part of your practice, would be a much better way to make money.

That’s why few people become school counselor for the salary. They do it to help kids, to help students succeed. Still, the salary isn’t completely bad, it can be quite decent for people with the right skills and dedication. If helping others is for you, and you have the skills to show it, then this may be a career for you.
